Pregnancy is a wonderful time to begin or continue your yoga practice. Yoga provides pregnant women with many benefits. Among the more common benefits including stretching and release of muscular tension and stress associated with pregnancy. When you practice yoga, you are not only stretching your muscles releasing tension and stress, you are also stretching the tissues that encase your muscles, stimulating your organ systems, promoting the circulation of blood and oxygen. Swelling and inflammation is sometimes a common side effect during pregnancy and is caused by water retention and decreased circulation. Since yoga helps promote circulation, it is effective at preventing and reducing swelling. This reduces the common swelling of the ankles, feet and hands. Lower back pain and sciatica are also common complaints during pregnancy. The change in posture is responsible for much of this pain. Regular prenatal yoga practice stretches the muscles of the lower back and strengthens these muscles. It also helps improve posture which helps with back pain. In pre natal yoga you learn to breath more intentionally to learn to relax and focus your attention inward in preparation to help you meet the phyisical and mental demands of labor and motherhood. The combined effect is intended to be one that promotes a heightened state of physical and emotional well-being.
